If The World Did Consider Criminal IntentUnder common law a person must have mens rea to be guilty of a crime. Would society be better off if criminal intent were not considered? After all, aren't we merely guessing about a person's actual motivation for committing crime?If criminal intent were not considered we would be putting people in jail for no reason. "You dropped a marble and it rolled into the street. A car ran over it and shot it through the air into this mans skull. You are guilty!" This is a completely unrealistic chain of events, but I think it demonstrates my point. Met by an equally frosty reception from audience and co-guests alike Griffin was booed and ridiculed throughout the show as he defended his party’s views including those on gays and lesbians. In regards to gay men he said "A lot of people find the sight of two men kissing in public a bit creepy. I understand that homosexuals don't understand that, but that is how a lot of us feel. Would you?Would you answer honestly if a national crime survey asked you about your criminal behavior, including drinking and drug use? If not, why not? If you would not answer honestly, do you question the accuracy of self-report surveys?I think the accuracy of any survey should be in question. There is absolutely no way to tell if any statistical survey is 100% accurate as many people would not answer the questions honestly. Many people answer surveys in the way they think the surveyor would like them to answer. Anonymous surveys have a higher likely hood of being accurate as the individual taking the survey does not have the fear of being identified or targeted by the answers he submits. I believe a crime survey would probably be the least accurate of survey done. Almost anyone who takes the survey would have some kind of fear that they could be “found” if the answered a question “wrong.” I do not believe there is any form of survey that could be 100% accurate, there will always be some margin of error. Party Jokes: Startling But UnnecessaryHere, I focus on a range of items and features that we use in life without giving them a second thought such as Coca Cola, body muscles and holding ones own breath. Though, most of these notes are not fundamentally necessary, they are such that you can use them for a good laugh, at a drinks party or for picking up women or men. Case in West Virginia Takes Odd TurnIn 2007, an African-American woman in West Virginia claimed to had “been stabbed, beaten with sticks, sexually assaulted, doused with hot water, forced to eat animal feces and taunted with racial slurs by seven white men and women. She later said that hot wax was poured on her and that two of her captors had forced to drink their urine.”On October 21, 2009, Megan Williams came clean in a press conference stating she made up the entire story to get back at an ex-boyfriend who had beaten her. There are many people in the world who make up huge elaborate stories such as this for a variety of reasons. Not too long ago Bonnie Sweeten called 911 and claimed she and her child was car jacked by 2 black men and locked in the trunk of the car. After her call a widespread search ensued for the location of her and the car. Shortly thereafter, she was found in Disneyworld. |
